Professional Offset Printing applications (both film plate and direct digital) require High-Resolution Imagery. Your images should be scaled to size and rendered in the CMYK color space at a resolution of 266-350 dpi depending on the line screen of the press. In order to provide the correct resolution value check with your printing company. The basic rule of thumb is to double the line screen value of the press. A press value of 133 lines per inch would require a minimum resolution value of 266 dpi etc.
Example: A 4x5 image scanned at 300 dpi in the CMYK color space would equal a file size of approximately 7 Megabytes.
The inability to meet these large file size requirements is one of the reasons that most Digital Cameras fall short for High- Resolution applications. The large file requirement is also one of the reasons that professional High Resolution Scanning is a bit more expensive as opposed to Low-Resolution applications.
Desktop Publishing, Web Graphics and Photographic applications for the Internet call for Low-Resolution digital files. The requirements may vary somewhat but for the most part Images should be scaled to size and rendered in the RGB color space at a resolution of 72-96 dpi. The same 4x5 image used in the example above scanned at 72 dpi in the RGB color space would now equal a file size of less than 500 Kilobytes depending on it’s color depth.
